GIS Course Project

(Due Date: Wednesday, December 3rd at 3:00PM)

Basic Components

Topic – The project should create an interactive database that can be used for specific types of scientific studies in a selected area.  The objective of the project must be specific and well defined.  The extent and project database will be determined by these objectives.  A project topic with detailed project objectives must be selected and turned in by Tuesday, Oct. 2nd.  See the description of the ‘planning stage’ in your notes when constructing the project objectives.

Technical Report - This should include a basic description of the purpose, extent, procedures, references, and resulting materials that define the project.  The procedure section should list the sources and processing steps that were utilized.  Software should also be listed in this section with version numbers.

Maps - One or more color maps should be printed out that summarize the important components of the project.  These should have all the required graphic components described in the previous labs.  Legends and views should be labeled correctly.  The database and all resulting maps must also be turned in on your memory stick and a back-up CD-rom.

Presentation - You will give a 10 to 15 minute presentation to the class on Wednesday, December 3rd utilizing the project database.  The projector will be setup in the computer lab with your project and you will give an overview of the important components of the project.

Grade

This project and presentation will count for a total of 16% of your class grade.  The technical report, database and maps will be worth 12% and your presentation will count 4%.  The maps will be graded differently depending on the amount of data that was already prepared for you before the project. Students that were required to collect and prepare more data from different sources will be given credit for this work.
