GEOL 1122 (CRN 8090)
Introduction to Geosciences II
Fall 2002

Homepage: TBA
Instructor: Dr. Sam Peavy (Roney 208)
Class: Roney 205, TR 9:30 - 10:45
Lab: Roney 305, T 1:00 - 2:50
Text:
The Changing Earth (3rd Ed.) by James S. Monroe & Reed Wicander
and a lab manual (to be handed out)

Objective Statement:

The student will be introduced to the evidence for a long and dynamic Earth history, the methods of logical interpretation of the evidence, and a brief summary of important events in the Earth’s history.

Class Policies:

1)     Attendance is required for both lecture and lab.  If you miss an exam or lab, you must have an excuse from a doctor or the Student Health Center to make up missed graded material.  Failure to provide an adequate excuse will result in a grade of 0 (“zero”) for the assignment.

2)     I will be available in my office for questions from 8:30-9:20 AM Tuesday and Thursday, and Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30-7:20 PM  (other times by appointment only).  I can also be called at 931-2330 or reached by email at speavy@canes.gsw.edu.

3)     Your grade will be based on lab exercises, exams from both lab and lecture, and a comprehensive Final Exam at the end of the semester.  There will be four lecture exams and three lab exams during the term (see schedules below).  These will count towards you final grade as follows:

12 Lab Exercises – 12% (1% each)

3 Lab Exams — 18% (6% each)

4 Lecture Exams — 50% (12.5% each)

1 Final Exam — 20%

Lecture exams will consist of a mixture of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, matching, short answer and essay questions over material covered in class.  Lab exams will be practical and will test your knowledge and ability to identify rocks, minerals and fossils, interpret geologic structure and relative and absolute time, understand the geologic history of Georgia and Providence Canyon, etc.  Of the 13 lab exercises, the lowest grade will be dropped, i.e. only 12 will count towards your grade.

4)     The grading scale will be as follows:
