Review Problems – Saddle Mountain, Arizona

Solutions

1)      Give the contour interval of this map: 40 feet.  Explain what this means.

A contour interval of forty feet means that each contour line is separated by 40 feet in elevation.

2)      Give the Scale of this map:  1:24,000.  Explain what this means.

A scale of 1:24,000 means that any 1 unit of measurement on the map is equivalent to 24,000 units on the real Earth.  For example, 1 inch on the map is equivalent to 24,000 inches on the Earth, or 1 cm on the map is equivalent to 24,000 cm, etc.

3)      Find the elevation of the hill in Section 25 in the northern part of the map:  3440 feet.

How many feet would you fall if you jumped off the hill with a hang glider and landed at the spring to the east of the hill?  320 feet (This is a question about relief)

4)      What is the distance and direction from Kellys Camp to Eskimazene Ranch (nearest 1/10th of a mile)?  1.9 miles east

5)      What is the distance from Eskimazene to Whittaker Ranch?  4.7 miles

6)      What is the distance from the point where State Rd. 77 begins in the NW part of the map to the point of the map where it leaves at the south?  Use a map wheel. [NOTE:  You must be in Roney 213 to have access to a map wheel.]

You should measure 16.6 inches, which is the equivalent of 6.3 miles.

7)      Determine the latitude and longitude of Crystal Cave (to the nearest minute).

32º53’N latitude, 110º41’W longitude

8)      Determine the flow direction of the San Pedro River:  North

Explain your answer.

The contour lines crossing the river will “V” upstream; in this case they “V” to the south, meaning that the river flows in a northerly direction.

9)      Find the GRADIENT of Green Lantern Wash (in ft/mile).

Depending on where you calculate measure, you will get answers ranging from ~82 ft/mile to~560 ft/mile.

10)  Determine the magnetic declination of this map and explain what it means.

14º East of North (you need the direction also!)

The magnetic declination is the deviation of where a compass needle points and true (or geographic) north.  Compasses point at the magnetic north pole, not the geographic north pole.  In this case, a compass would point 14 degrees to the east of north.
