Seismicity - South Atlantic Ocean

Image from the National Earthquake Information Center

The data shown here indicate a margin where the plates are pulling apart, producing only shallow earthquakes within the crust.  The reason for this is that the hot mantle is too hot to "break" and produce earthquakes.  Along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge itself, earthquakes occur along normal faults.  On the transform faults associated with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, earthquakes are associated with strike-slip faults.
