           Sixth Edition

Objective Statement:

This course is second semester continuation of Physics 1111. The student will further develop his or her analytical skills by learning and applying a wide variety of problem solving techniques. The student will cover a broad range of topics from thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism and optics.

Class Policies:

1)       Attendance is required for both lecture and lab. I will take attendance often and it will be worth 10% of your cumulative grade. If you miss an exam or lab, you must have an excuse from a doctor or the Student Health Center to make up missed graded material.  Failure to provide an adequate excuse will result in a grade of 0 (“zero”) for the assignment.

2)       I will be available in my office for questions from 9-10 AM on Monday and on Thursday (other times by appointment only).  I can also be reached by phone or voice mail at 931-2321, or by email at skostov@canes.gsw.edu

3)       Your grade will be based on lecture exams, lab reports, homework assignments, and a comprehensive Final Exam at the end of the semester. There will be no additional credit given. Your course grade will be determined as follows:

3 Lecture exams              45% (13% lowest score, 15% middle                                                      score and 17% highest score)

   Lab exercises                    10%

   In-class quiz                      10%

   Attendance                         10%

   Final exam        25% (Comprehensive)

4)       The experimental lab sessions will be announced in advance and will be held only during certain weeks of the semester. All remaining two hour blocks of allocated lab time will be devoted to problem solving exercises and require your utmost attention. I consider these (and for that matter so should you) to be the most important part of the course.

5)    Homework will be assigned but will not be collected. Instead, quasi-weekly short quiz will be given at the beginning or the end of class.  Solutions to the homework problems will be given in class or as additional handouts and/or webpage postings. It is your responsibility to work out the homework assignments in full and to ask for help in a timely matter if you have problems understanding the material.
