ENGL 4020 History of the English Language

Course Description
We will study the history of our common
language from its beginnings as a purely oral language spoken by Germanic
barbarians to its current status as the lingua franca of much of the so-called
first world. In order to accomplish this task we will need to study
some of the rudiments of linguistics, as well as selections of the written
language from representative periods of its development.
Course Objectives
- Discover the concepts of linguistics, including phonology and morphology.
- Investigate the structure and history of the English language.
- Synthesize the history of the English language with the history of English
literature.
