Course Description and Objectives
Course Description:
This course is designed to help you develop
and practice critical reading and writing skills. Its main goal is to develop
habits of reading and writing that you will use throughout your personal,
academic and professional lives. The course focuses on reading literary
works and writing about them.
Objectives of ENGL 1102:

Practice organizing and developing paragraphs
and essays that include an introduction, adequate support, and a conclusion.

Practice formulating and supporting a thesis
(or controlling idea).

Practice constructing clear, precise, grammatically
correct sentences.

Learn to recognize and use Standard Edited American
English.

Compose college level essays that are logical,
interesting, and informative.

Learn to document and cite material taken from
other sources.

Learn basic research methods using both hardcopy
and electronic sources.

Acquire a clear understanding of literary terms,
and genres, including but not limited to Fiction, Novel, Drama, point of
view, character, setting, plot and theme.

Hone your abilities to think critically and
analytically while assessing literary works.
