Course Description
This course is designed to help you develop and
practice critical reading and writing skills. Its main goal is to teach habits for reading and writing that you will
use throughout your personal, academic and professional lives.

Recognize
and use Standard Edited American English
Understand basic English grammar and avoid grammar
errors, including but not limited to the following: fragments, subject/verb and
pronoun/antecedent disagreement, comma splices, run-on sentences, misuse of
possessives, misspelling, faulty pronoun reference, and awkward phrasing.
- Construct clear, precise, grammatically correct sentences.

Organize and develop paragraphs and essays that include an introduction,
support, and a conclusion.
Formulate and support a thesis (or controlling idea).
- Compose college level essays that are logical, interesting, and
informative.
Document and cite material taken from other sources.

Learn to use WebCT, especially the tools for asynchronous on-line
discussion.
