FOSSILS AND THE TAXONOMIC HIERARCHY

The list below arranges the fossils of southwest Georgia in their proper positions in the standard taxonomic hierarchy. Many other intermediate levels that those given are possible, and different biologists/paleontologists might assign a particular name to a different level that the one given here, but the overall hierarchical arrangement would be very similar regardless of the exact details.

Two (of five total) kingdoms are represented in this list. Fossils of the other kingdoms, and of other subordinate taxa within those kingdoms that are not listed here, might be found more readily in rocks of different ages, different parts of the world, or different sedimentary environments than those common in our region. This list is by no means exhaustive, and additions will be made to it from time to time.
