ATWS SOUTH ASIA CHAPTER HOLDS TWELFTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE

 

The Twelfth Annual Conference of the South Asia Chapter of the Association of Third World Studies was held at Dr. S.M.C.S.I Medical College & Hospital, Karakonam, Trivandrum, India, May 4-6, 2007.

Opening remarks were presented by Mrs. Helen Azariah, President of the ATWS South Asia Chapter, and a Condolence Resolution on the demise of Dr. K.K. Kusuman, founder Vice-President of the chapter, who passed away on March 18, 2007, was read by Dr. B. Sobhanam, Professor and Head of the Department of History, Kerala University.

The conference focused on four themes: (1) Eco-Social Problems of Third World Countries;(2) Palliative Care and Communicative Diseases; (3) Women and Social legislation; and (4) Science and Technology.

According to chapter President Helen Azariah, “The sessions were well attended and postgraduate student participation was encouraging. A sight-seeing trip to a Jain temple on a hill was arranged.

President Azariah also informed ATWS international headquarters that the South Asia Chapter of ATWS has published “Proceedings Volume of the Tenth Annual Conference,” held May 14-15, 2005 at the Jubilee Memorial Animation Centre, Trivandrum. The 135 page volume, edited by Dr. K.K. Kusuman, features papers on Third World problems, such as Human Rights, Women’s Empowerment, Child Labor, and also includes papers on “Science, Technology and Medicine,” authored by scientists, technicians and physicians.
